Visceral Imagination and Rigorous Play

May 16-20 (Tues. - Sat.) 5:30PM - 11PM

25 Hours of Class Time

Location: 863 Broadview Ave. 2nd Floor. Toronto, ON. M4K 2P9

CAD $645 (USD $490)

Let’s soften our brains, open up our hearts and shake up our bodies! This workshop starts with precursor exercises to the pursuit of our uniquely individual clowns down the road, as we necessarily welcome a sense of play and imagination back into our work. We will attempt to begin melting that top layer of the iceberg that is your socially-conditioned selves. We will invite your generous openness, ferocious abandon, insistent honesty and gleeful mischief to make a larger footprint in your work. Perhaps you will sweat. Perhaps you will make songs. Perhaps you will listen deeper and harder. Perhaps you will release some glorious laughters and cathartic tears into the ether. Perhaps this all will be silly. Perhaps this requires you to breathe and believe. Perhaps you will make something disastrous and messy. Perhaps you will make something wonderful and surprising. Though hopefully you can reignite a teeny-weeny sparkly inkling to lead from the bravery, integrity and generosity of your child within so that muscle of freshness, vulnerability and ferociousness can show up in your scenes to come.

To Apply: email manager@performanceatelier.ca with

  • A recent photo / or an actor headshot

  • CV / or a Brief Bio / or a Creative Resume

  • A Very brief note of interest and motivation for the class.

We’ll get back to you ASAP and move forward from there!

ACTING 101: You and the Text

(Completed - Please stay tuned for our next round!!)

Anatomies of a Dramatic Text, Circumstances, Investment, Attention and Channeling Passions

with Eugene Ma

Founder of Performance Atelier & former faculty member at Columbia University’s Graduate Acting Program, Yale School of Drama, and Dome Studio in Beijing.

April 24-29 (Monday to Saturday) 6-10PM

24 Hours

CAD$595 (USD$435)

This course is designed for those who want to finally take the plunge and rigorously embody and solidify or review the basics. So the cement is very very strong with a sustained text.

We first take a monologue as a vehicle for exploring basic ideas of Stanislavski’s system to build a solid yet flexible foundations that is applicable and from the actor’s point of view. This class stresses an embodied approach to text analysis and finding triumphs in cracking a piece of text’s humanity wide open.

Tools that we will use will also include a Chuck Jones vocal warm up, early physical awareness and relaxation/ centering, Mary Overlie’s notion of presence, and possibly Raina von Waldenburg’s physical impulse exercises.
